Innovation Happens next door
Marketing is a subject that I’ve been particularly obsessed by since my early years being a farm manager (at age 13). Now much older and having been schooled in the subject I have constantly been doubtful of the effectiveness of what Seth Godin refers to as interruption marketing.
I have witnessed and taken part in a more socially enabled marketing medium. This mode of marketing has been explored by believer in consumer evangelists, further in the book by Seth called Unleashing the idea virus
.
My company, The Big Picture, is currently in the process of launching a Text based soccer update service that provides real-time updates to lovers across east Africa. We are a small company without the marketing dollars of large corporations. Having debated amongst ourselves our partner Organization New Enterprise objects recommended leveraging the social nature and interaction of people to evangelize to great effect.
What we are considering:
a.Creating a forum, where people of similar interests can interact and communicate on soccer
b.Create a critical mass of users who can then switch to the mobile service that complements and validates their beliefs
c.Get a small number of users on both the web service and the mobile service to serve a larger cause for the benefit of all users (we have some fantastic ideas around this that’s going to change the way marketing is done in eastern Africa)
d.Build other useful functionality especially in cyberspace that will attract other users beyond the “borders” of Eastern Africa
I know all this looks vague and non-specific but I will continue to fill in the gaps going forward.
Term of interest: Memetics.
